Growing up in a home full of musical instruments, Ryan's interest in music started at a very young age. His first experience learning to play an instrument was weekly piano lessons with Sault Ste. Marie's own Jean Harnden who lived just a few doors down the street. Before long, it was realized that although Ryan obviously enjoyed making music, he wasn't taking the piano very seriously, frequently preferring to practice with his toes instead of his fingers. Showing an interest in his father's guitar, Ryan soon received a guitar of his own for Christmas, and proving much more difficult to play with his toes than the piano, he had little choice but to start using his fingers.
Ryan is primarily self-taught on the guitar, although he learned his first chords from his father and studied finger-picking the guitar with Dennis McGregor for two years. Almost 20 years and countless hours of playing later, Ryan was honored to start his own teaching journey alongside Dennis here at Thomas Walls School Of Music. Ryan has since been teaching for 15 years and brings a growing wealth of skills and experience to our teaching staff, he is equally comfortable teaching many different musical styles and enjoys teaching students of all ages and skill levels.
